Shillong

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive Guwahati in Assam. Transfer to hotel in Guwahati. Check-in at the hotel.

Day 02: Morning sightseeing of Guwahati visiting the famous Kamakhya temple in Nilachal Hill (One can trek the hill to reach the temple through its old route - Optional). Thereafter drive to Shillong (3 hours). Known as the "Scotland of the East," Shillong is a charming hill station surrounded by rolling hills, vibrant green landscapes, and waterfalls. It offers an ideal mix of natural beauty and cultural experiences. The city is also famous for its lively markets, local delicacies, and the rich history of its British colonial architecture. Check-in and overnight.

Day 03: Sightseeing of Shillong visiting the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous cultures aka Don Bosco Museum which provides a glimpse of the ethnic cultural diversity of the region, the Wards lake, the Elephant falls etc. Evening proceed to Mawphlang (1 hour). Overnight.

Day 04: Trek inside the sacred forest of Mawphlang and on the David Scott trail. Nestled in the East Khasi Hills, Mawphlang is a serene village famous for its sacred groves. These ancient forests, showcases an incredible diversity of plant life, flowering trees, orchids, and butterflies, preserved through traditional religious practices, making it a true Nature's Museum and offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage and biodiversity. The Mawphlang Sacred Forest is a must-visit for eco-tourism enthusiasts and adventure seekers looking to explore pristine nature. Trekking here gives you an intimate experience of Meghalaya’s untouched wilderness. 

The David Scott Trail is a stunning trekking route in Meghalaya, named after the British officer David Scott who first used it as a route to connect Shillong with the plains of Bangladesh. The trail is approximately 16 km long and takes you through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the region, offering a unique blend of adventure and history. Starting from Mawphlang, the trail leads through dense forests, rolling hills, quaint Khasi villages, and vibrant valleys. You’ll pass by ancient root bridges, waterfalls, and streams, all while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The terrain is mostly easy to moderate, making it suitable for most trekkers, though some sections require a bit of effort.

Day 05: Today proceed to Cherrapunjee (2 hours). Once considered the wettest place on Earth, Cherrapunjee (or Sohra) is a paradise for adventure lovers. With its lush greenery, steep cliffs, and dramatic landscapes, it’s a perfect destination for adventure. Travellers can explore the living root bridges - an eco-friendly marvel crafted by locals to cross small streams and rivulets natural ancient caves, and waterfalls like Nohkalikai Falls—one of India’s tallest, Mawsmai and Arwah Caves offer thrilling underground exploration. Cherrapunji is a beautiful blend of adventure and serenity. Check-in and sightseeing of Cherrapunjee. Overnight.

Day 06: Trek to the double decker root bridge. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring natural wonders of Meghalaya, located in the village of Nongriat, near Cherrapunji. This remarkable bridge is made entirely of living tree roots, skillfully manipulated and trained by the Khasi tribe over several generations to create a functional and resilient structure. To reach the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, you’ll need to embark on a trek from the nearby village of Mawlynnong (around 3 to 4 hours one way). The journey is a thrilling adventure, passing through dense forests, hills, and traditional Khasi villages. The trek can be challenging due to the steep descents and climbs, but the rewarding view of the bridge at the end makes it all worth it.Overnight at Cherrapunjee.

Day 07: Today go for caving in Cherrapunjee. Mawsmai Cave is famous for its intricate limestone structures, including impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The cave's interior is a natural wonder, with formations that have been shaped over thousands of years by the slow process of mineral deposits, creating striking shapes and textures. Arwah Cave is a hidden gem located near Cherrapunji, in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. Known for its unique limestone formations and intriguing natural features, Arwah Cave is a must-visit for those interested in spelunking, geology, and natural beauty. One of the most fascinating aspects of Arwah Cave is the presence of ancient fossils. During your exploration, you can find the fossilized remains of marine life embedded in the cave’s walls, which are remnants of the region’s prehistoric past when this area was submerged under the sea. Overnight at Cherrapunjee.

Day 08:  Drive to Dawki (3 hours). Dawki is a picturesque town located in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, near the border with Bangladesh. Known for its stunning natural beauty and tranquil surroundings, Dawki is a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. The main attraction in Dawki is the crystal-clear Umngot River, often regarded as one of the cleanest rivers in India. The water is so transparent that boats appear to be floating in mid-air. Boating on the river is a must-do activity, providing an opportunity to admire the surrounding lush green hills, bamboo forests and peaceful atmosphere. Enjoy canoeing/ boating on the Umngot river. Overnight in Dawki. 

Day 09 : Drive to Umiam lake (3 hours). Afternoon enjoy boating in / trekking around the lake. 

Day 10 : Proceed to Guwahati airport for your flight to Kolkata/ New Delhi and onward connection.
